Teeth that just don’t look quite right can be improved by a porcelain veneer placed on the surface.
Porcelain veneers are thin pieces of porcelain or another material that are bonded to the front of your teeth to change color or shape. Little or no anesthesia is needed during the treatment.
We can use dental veneers to make teeth look great when they have uneven surfaces or are:
- Oddly shaped.
- Unevenly spaced.
- Badly stained.
- Separated by a gap.
- Damaged by an injury.
- Worn down.
Veneers can also cover the results of a root canal procedure or discolored fillings in front teeth.
Porcelain veneers have a longer life expectancy and color stability than a bonding treatment. This cosmetic dentistry procedure also resists staining from coffee, tea, or even cigarette smoking.
The Process of Placing Veneers
Veneers are usually made by a dental lab technician working from a model that we provide. Veneers are usually irreversible because it’s necessary to remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth to accommodate the shell.
Typically, veneers take three appointments. The first appointment is just for an examination, diagnosis, and treatment planning.
Next comes the tooth preparation visit, usually lasting one to two hours. The teeth are lightly buffed to allow for the small added thickness of the veneer. A mold is also taken of the teeth, which is sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the veneers.
During the final visit, also about one or two hours, the veneers are placed on the tooth surface with water or glycerin on the teeth to check their fit and get a sense of the shade or color. While the veneers are resting on your teeth, they can be adjusted to match the color of your teeth.
Finally, your veneers are bonded to your teeth. You’ll then leave for a two-week adjustment period before coming back in for a follow-up appointment. It’s important to brush and floss your veneers daily!
