What is dental implant preparation?

Tabor Dental Associates serve the Hendersonville, Gallatin, Goodlettsville & Nashville areas.

To help patients become eligible for dental implants, Dr. Jayson Tabor can perform many of procedures that get the site in the mouth ready for a dental implant. Since implants must go into the bone, if there’s not enough bone, then grafting might be needed to accomplish an adequate site- or as we say, we may need to grow some bone. There are many types of bone grafting. Sinus lift surgery, ridge grafting, and socket preservation are the most common types of bone grafting we perform at our convenient Hendersonville office. Tooth loss, periodontal (gum) disease, or abnormal oral structures could cause the need for bone grafting to be able to place dental implants.

Sinus lift: Sometimes your maxillary sinuses expand, taking up disproportionate space in your upper jaw and cheeks. In addition to changing your facial shape, sinus enlargement and jawbone loss can make patients with missing teeth ineligible for advanced implant-supported crowns, bridges, and dentures. During a sinus lift procedure, Dr. Tabor raises sinuses so that new, healthier tissue can develop beneath them after bone grafting.

Ridge augmentation: Sometimes, when a tooth has been lost traumatically or when a tooth has been missing for a long time, the bone has eroded away over the years. This means that there isn’t available bone for an implant. In this case, we can ‘augment’ the bone by adding to what you have and grow enough bone to allow for implant placement.

Socket preservation: When it is known that a tooth needs to be removed, it is good planning to perform a socket preservation procedure at the time of extraction. Bone in your mouth is tooth-dependent, which means that if a tooth is removed, then the bone will erode away quickly. If socket preservation is performed, this maintains the bone levels so an implant can be placed in the near future and so that no facial structure and support is lost.
