Dental Implants

Before: This patient presented with something called Tetracylcine Staining, which is where a particular antibiotic causes developing teeth in a child to grow in with heavy dark coloring and banding. These teeth will not whiten and must be covered with porcelain in order to change the appearance. Also, several of her teeth were compromised with severe gum disease and needed to be removed.

After: We chose to treat the upper teeth with 10 porcelain veneers. The lower front teeth were compromised with gum disease and needed to be removed. We replaced the lower front teeth with dental implants with fixed teeth and the remaining lower teeth with porcelain veneers and crowns.

Before: This patient presented with severe gum disease on all of her remaining teeth. This is often called, in dental circles, as terminal dentition. All this means is that the teeth that are in this kind of a patient’s mouth are terminal, not fixable and all going to be lost/extracted very soon.

After: There are several options to consider with this patient. There were two main parts. The first part was the surgical component where we chose to remove all the remaining non-restorable teeth and place several implants on top and bottom as the base for her new teeth. This procedure was all done in one appointment under general anesthesia by an anesthesiologist in our Hendersonville dental office.

An implant is an artificial tooth root that can be used to replace the root of one or several teeth. Or when several (4-8) implants are placed at once, an entire row of new teeth can be hooked together and placed on the new implants. That is the second part- where new, custom teeth are fitted to the implants and function like a brand new set of teeth. They stay in permanently, do not move, and do not have to be taken in and out multiple times daily like conventional, uncomfortable dentures. When we finished treatment, this patient told me that this treatment for her had saved her life!

Before: This patient had a front tooth break off at the gum line leaving very little tooth. Since this was an emergency appointment and because it was a front tooth, the patient needed immediate but long-lasting dental care. Also, upon closer evaluation, there was a difference in widths between the two front teeth. You can see that space of the left front tooth was wider than the right front tooth.

After: The root fragment was removed and a dental implant was placed. A temporary tooth was custom made to go on the implant until it healed. Once this occurred, a porcelain crown was made to fit over the implant and a veneer was placed on the right front tooth. This allowed for both of the front teeth to be the same height and width. the quality and longevity of care that dental implants provide is unprecedented. Dental implants offer the best way to re-create “creation” when it comes to replacing missing teeth or teeth that are compromised beyond repair. If you are missing one or more teeth, you may be a candidate for dental implants.

Before: Sometimes a picture says more than words are capable of communicating. That is the case here where the patient had several broken and severely decayed teeth. He was tired of having such a rugged and deteriorated smile. He was ready for a change.

After: One tooth had to be removed because of extensive decay and it was replaced with a dental implant. The rest of his teeth were restored with porcelain veneers. This was a radical and much needed change for this patient!

Porcelain Veneers

Before: This patient presented with worn edges on her front teeth. When the bite is not aligned properly, it can cause accelerated wear and damage of the natural tooth structure, as it did here.

After: We bonded in 8 veneers and balanced her bite so that her teeth and her bite were balanced more evenly and naturally. This improved not only the overall appearance of her smile but also the function and long term stability of her bite.

Before: This patient had been in our practice for years and we had discussed how worn and short his teeth had become due to an uneven bite. I often will compare this to having uneven alignment on your car. When the wheels are aligned, the tires wear evenly and last a long time. If they aren’t aligned properly, then the tires wear quickly, unevenly and will not last very long. Teeth and bite alignment function similarly. And, this was the case here as his uneven bite caused extreme and premature wear on all the teeth in his mouth.

After: Porcelain veneers and crowns were placed on all the teeth and his bite was balanced so all his teeth touched evenly. Not only was his smile improved esthetically but the function and long term durability of his teeth was greatly improved. When we were finished with his treatment, he told me, “I can’t stop smiling and looking at my smile in the mirror!”

This patient really showcases how awesome conservative dentistry can be! This patient had large spaces, oversized front teeth, undersized and rotated lateral teeth (these are the teeth next to the 2 front teeth).

Treatment performed: We used Six Month Smiles(clear braces) to rotate the necessary upper teeth and close the space between the 2 front teeth. Then, we placed 2 prepless veneers over the 2 laterals. This was a fun case and life-changing treatment for her!

Before: This patient had several teeth that were crowded and flared in the wrong direction. She was limited on time and wanted an immediate result to give her a more natural looking smile without the crowded and rotated teeth.

After: There are two ways to fix crowded teeth: straighten the teeth with braces or make the teeth look straighter with veneers. This patient chose the second of those options and we placed veneers on the top and bottom teeth to make everything look natural and in the correct place. It was a fantastic result for the patient and it was done in just a couple of weeks!

Before: This patient had several overlapping teeth and wanted them straighter but not so white that people would see her from a mile away. She wanted something natural and elegant, but undetectable and feminine.

After: The face shots say it all here. We placed veneers on the upper teeth, whitening her smile a few shades but maintaining a natural beauty that is far from fake-looking. Notice the difference in how she is smiling in the after picture versus the before picture. That communicates the difference this made in her life.

Before: This patient had some old, stained bonding on her two front teeth. Also, the two teeth on either side of the front two teeth were undersized and unnatural.

After: We bonded four veneers on her front teeth. A very simple and conservative procedure, this smile was radically transformed in just a couple of weeks!

Before: Minimally invasive dentistry means that we, as dentists, do everything we can to preserve as much God-given tooth structure as possible because we know that natural tooth structure is the best material you can have in your mouth. In this case, the patient’s teeth were slightly smaller than she wanted and were a little misshaped. The patient wanted something that would give her a new smile but also be minimally invasive.

After: 6 “prepless” DURAthin veneers were bonded to the front teeth. The patient was given a natural, beautiful, whiter smile and it was done with the utmost protection of the natural tooth structure.

Six Month Smiles

Before: This patient present with crooked teeth and several white and brown splotches on his front teeth.

After: We treated this patient with adult cosmetic braces, also called Six Month Smiles. We also used a special whitening procedure to eliminate the splotches on his teeth. This is an awesome example of how some types of cosmetic dentistry can still be very conservative.

Before: This patient had some slight crowding with her front teeth. She decided to use Six Month Smiles (also referred to as cosmetic adult orthodontics) as way to correct this.

After: After about 6 months of treatment, the crowding was resolved and her smile improved greatly. I love cases like this that are conservative and restore teeth to their natural, healthy position.

Before: This patient had large spaces between her teeth. Six month smiles was the answer. Six month smiles, also called adult cosmetic braces, can straighten the teeth in the front very quickly without major changes to your bite. Most case take about 6 months!

After: Using clear braces, we closed the spaces and polished out the stained areas giving her a new reason to smile!
